File Extension ISO
ISO is a file extension used for images and does not contain any attachments. Just like the ZIP and RAR format it is based on the ISO-9660standard. The format can merge a succession of files into a single file and this is done in accordance to a distinct format. ISO is a file format belonging to a certain optical discs which use the conventional International Organization for Standardization (ISO) format.

The format gets a great deal of support from software vendors as well. Some of the operating systems in which one can use the ISO file format are like Windows (Joliet ISO extension), Linux (RockRidge file extension ISO), and DOS among other operating systems. ISO includes file data that is contained on an archived DVD/CD. The format also contains all the metadata that belong to the file system including structures, attributes and boot code. The format is not usable on VCDs, hybrid CDs and audio CDs because the format does not lend support to multitrack layouts.

The ISO format has its own file extension; the .ISO but the images of the format that are used in the Mac OS X often come with the .CDR file extension. The name ISO comes from ISO 9660 system for files that is used along with media of CD-ROM. The user can achieve better performance if they run an ISO format because the I/O hard drive has more speed compared to DVD/CD drive I/O. It is also possible to use file extension ISO to provide backup like PSP backups.

One can use programs like MagicISO to create ISO images using CDS, extract files coming directly from images of ISO and ISO CD files of images that are open. The biggest size of an ISO image that can be processed by such programs is usually ten gigabytes.
